Week 5 Recap: The Rest

Air Force 24, New Mexico 7
Actually pretty even overall statistically (even if UNM only rushed for 41 and AFA only passed for 19), but 2 UNM turnovers were probably the bulk of the difference here. Air Force: MWC favorites?

Kent State 37, Akron 15
QBs dominated here, with Kent's Julian Edelman throwing for 307 and 2 scores, and running for 69 and another TD. Luke Getsy threw for 261 and 2 scores, but Kent had the benefit of a running game, between Edelman and RB Tony Howard (62 yards, 2 TD). Kent is...good? The heck.

Washington 21, Arizona 10
Washington QB Isaiah Stanback was a one man team, gaining 340 all-purpose yards (293 passing with a 2/1 TD/INT, and 47 rushing). Arizona's Willie Tuitama threw for 308, but like the Akron/Kent game, the winning team was the only one with a rushing game. Washington's as legit as any of the mid-tier Pac 10 teams.

Arkansas State 31, Florida International 6
Rushing Yards: Arkansas State 222, Florida International 9.

Rice 48, Army 14
Rice QB Chase Clement: 29/39, 399 yards, 5 TD. And the Owls' leading rusher with 64 yards! Army had a decent day, gaining barely over 300 total yards, but they were not able to stop the offensive explosion of...Rice.

Northern Illinois 40, Ball State 28
Garrett Wolfe: 31 car, 353 yards, 3 TD. Ball State officially cannot stop the pass OR the run.

Baylor 17, Kansas State 3
Baylor still has no running game (43 yards, even less than KSU's 46), but when the other team throws 3 picks and fumbles it over twice, you can finally get your first I-A win.

Southern Miss 19, Central Florida 14
UCF finally outgains an opponent! And fumbles it over and has an INT returned for a touchdown to lose it. So sad.

Kentucky 45, Central Michigan 36
CMU gained 591 total yards. QB Dan LeFevour threw for 360 and 4 TD. But they turned it over 4 times. Whoops.

Missouri 28, Colorado 13
Colorado outgained the Tigers 511-386, but aggressive fourth-down playcalling and failed trickeration led to 5 turnovers on downs. Mizzou QB Chase Daniel looked above-average, going 23/35 and throwing for 253 and a 4/2 TD/INT.

Colorado State 35, Fresno State 23
Nobody looked exceptional for Fresno, and QB Tom Brandstater threw 3 picks. CSU WR Damon Morton had 103 and a TD receiving, and a punt return TD. The Mountain West should be fun. And frustrating to predict.

Navy 41, Connecticut 17
Navy had 504 yards rushing. Sigh. Bonislawski didn't look as horrible as Hernandez did. But still. We're in trouble.

Louisiana-Lafayette 33, Eastern Michigan 14
The heck? EMU is awful.

Miami 14, Houston 13
Wow, Miami gained over 400 yards, which you wouldn't think by watching it. The bright spot: frosh RB Javarris James (of the Edgerrin James Jameses) ran for 148 and a score. Miami's probably still screwed, but hey, at least the ACC sucks.

Idaho 41, Utah State 21
UTAH STATE SCORES AN OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN! THREE EVEN! Moral victories abound for USU. Game was actually statistically close, Idaho just returned two USU turnovers for touchdowns.

Iowa State 28, Northern Iowa 27
ISU had the statistical advantage, and 3 Cyclone turnovers probably made it close, but let's just pretend I said anything about Iowa State being a potential contender in the North. Or at least being better than Missouri.

Middle Tennessee State 35, North Texas 0
UNT only had 103 total yards. God.

UTEP 44, New Mexico State 38
SHOOTOUT! NMSU QB Chase Holbrook had 506 and a 4/1 TD on 48 completions and 73...yes, 73, attempts. UTEP QB The Jordan Palmer Interception Experience: 18/26, 414, 3/2 TD/INT.

Pittsburgh 45, Toledo 3
Toledo could only manage 248 yards playing catch-up the entire game, and that about says that.

Rutgers 22, South Florida 20
Teams like Michigan win on rushing and defense. Rutgers wins on rushing (Ray Rice: 202, TD) and not stopping anyone (USF QB Matt Grothe: 16/25, 241, 1/2 TD/INT passing, 61 and 2 TD rushing). I doubt this will continue to be a viable strategy.

San Jose State 31, San Diego State 10
Man, SJSU's decent, what the heck. SJSU QB Adam Tafralis: 17/21, 234 yards, 2 TD. Good for him. SDSU is probably the one team in the MWC that doesn't have a chance, although I'm hesitant to even say that.

UCLA 31, Stanford 0
Oh God. Neither team was any good, and the QBs had a 0/5 TD/INT, but Stanford, please. Give up now.

Syracuse 40, Wyoming 34 (2 OT)
Wyoming almost double Syracuse's yardage 545-284, but Wyoming had some turnovers at bad times and pretty much lost the field position battle. Star of the show: Cuse RB Delone Carter, running for 129 and 4 TD.

Vanderbilt 43, Temple 14
TEMPLE

IS

SO

BAD

Texas Tech 31, Texas A&M 27
Tech is passtastic but has no defense, A&M can run but still isn't that impressive. Hooray status quo.
